while hiking at BattleCreek Park on a very windy last Sunday:

"Mama, do you know what the tornado is?"

What?

"The KING of the wind."

Before the scary part

at BareBones at Hidden Falls last Friday evening, the stage got dark and quiet, some low horns bubbling along in the background... "Mama, I think the badness is coming..."

"in good we trust"

JJ had to take a magnifying glass to a penny and write down what it said on a piece of paper. When he read it to me, he pronounced "in god we trust" as "in good we trust."

I kind of like it.

On the way to Buffalo City with Friends Part 2

Oh, and earlier along in the trip, when we told him the house we were going to had two dogs. Lately he has a fear of dogs. It doesn't last long since he usually ends up snuggling up with them by the third minute he arrives. Anyway, before all that...

"Oh, great! One minute you're just hanging out with your dad having a great time and the next thing you know you are having sleepovers out of town with two dogs!"

On the way to Buffalo City with friends

"Mama! Stop listening to everything I'm not sayin'!"

It'd been 2 hours in the car already. No nap to speak of. I was nagging him about something I'm sure.

So Mama...

well, the questioning continues. "So Mama... tell me about a time you drowned... (drownded)..." Interestingly enough, this streak of curiosity seems to coincide with an increased refusal to answer any questions or any kind. "Mama, I'm not answerin any more questions. That's all you need to know. So just forget about it. Forget everything. Forget me. Forget you. Forget everything."

Still, I love his being curious. It means he is developing interest in others, I tell myself. Dada wonders what he is up to. What's he getting at with all these questions.

anyway, coming home from camping eating at Bette's Pies, Jude was on a mad asking streak, but I was exhausted so I directed him to Noah. Ask Noah about all the times he got in trouble and had to go to jail, broke bones, threw up, etc...

Jude is fascinated with puking and shared about the 3 times he recalls getting sick. Then: "Do you want to know once how my dad got sick and throwed up?"

"No!" we both said.

"Well, he got the virus that I got and it went to his stomach and he throwed up. And you know what he throwed up? Cabbage."

Eventually: "So Noah... tell me about all the times you started fires..."

The wild mushroom burger nearly came out my nose. I suddenly pictured sweet Noah in leather and chains hanging out with riffraff in dark alleys. Once recovered, we realized Jude had gotten "started fires" somehow from an earlier disclosure on how Noah once got "fired" (under the "tell me about a time you got in trouble" round of questions) from a job for using liquid dish soap in the dishwasher.

Mama, what are you most afraid of?

Well Jude...when I your age I was afraid of a lot of things.
Yeah, like what? What real things were you afraid of?
Well... like cockroaches...
And what else?
Well... monsters... and sometimes elevators....
You mean because of the doors closing on you?
That sort of thing. One time grandma Leen was yellin at me to get out of the elevator and she was already out and I was afraid the doors would close because I had waited too long.
Yeah, and what else?
Well... I was afraid of bullies...
What kind of bullies?

We went on for a while about bullies.
Yeah, and what else were you afraid of when you were little?
Well... the dark sometimes...

This went on for a while. I thought of everything I could think of.

Mama? We're you ever afraid of a glove that moved all by itself?

I'm sure I was, honey.
How about a candle floating in the air?
For sure.

After that we moved on to Mama, tell me about the times you got in trouble and tell me about the times you got sick.

Mama, why can't you use cell phones on planes?

Well, Jude, because they need all the air fresh up there....

Mama, that doesn't mean nothing...  How can talking on the phones make the air bad?

THey need all the air they can use to fly the plane...

I still don't get it.

.... Well, all the sound waves need all the air space they need to fly the plane....

Oh, I get this...

Royalty

Hey Mama! Guess what?

What honey?

I am the king and you are the queen!

That's sweet Jude.

Yeah. The king lives in the front of the house and the queen lives in the back of the house.

Some things he said and did on the last day of kindergarten so far...

ate his cheerios breakfast on the floor out of his "cat bowls" as requested. One full of Cheerios, the other full of water. He's been doing this a good couple years now
"when we go camping this summer can we live there on that mountain all summer?"
"Dada gets me water when I ask for it at the Red House"
"Hows' my little woman?" (responding to me inquiring "how's my little man?")
"We want love, we bring love, namaste"
made thank you cards for teachers, after some resistance
more to come...

A Facebook thingy from Dada

which he forwarded to me since I think he is the funniest writing man alive today...

My son: "Can you destroy love?"
Me: "No."
My son: "I know how to destroy love."
Me: "How?"
My son: "You get vinegar and baking soda and flour and you ... "

Portrait of Mama

"Here, Mama, here?"
"Cute, honey. Who is it?"
"You!"
"Me? Oh how sweet! Is that a headband?"
"No! That's your forehead."
"My forehead?"
"Yes, sometimes you get those lines on it. See just like that! Do it again, Mama. Show me your lines!"
"Thanks Jude."

Yesterday while playing with one of his little bff's, his little friend asked if they could watch "Little Red Rascals."  !!!!    Reminded me of the time Jude asked if we could stop for lunch at "Old McDonalds..."

Birthdays...

Yesterday Jude turned six, but we celebrated all week. The annual party at the Red House followed by the Malt Shop outing on his actual birthday. He's so excited he takes one bite of his birthday sundae and then says he is done.

Yesterday, still on his birthday, he asked, "Mama when do I get to have another birthday?"

Well... in a year, honey, I said. When you turn seven.

Too long to wait. "Mama, can I turn seven while I'm still six?"

:)

The night before driving around on 44th and France, we pass the gargantuan liquor store, with Wine in the  name, I think.  Anyway, tonight he took a particular interest even though we drive by it frequently.

Is that a museum, Mama? he wants to know.
Some might say, I say, but no honey.
Is it a dentists' office?
Nope.
What is it?
It's a wine shop.
A wine shop?
Yup!
You mean its' a place where people go and whine?
Well...subliminally I suppose.
What's sublimillleee mean?
Oh nothing honey. We can talk about that when you are older.  But you are brilliant. I think a whine shop where people go to wine is the best idea I have heard in a long time! If people were allowed to wine, esp adults, they might not need as much wine!

I tell him about LOVELAND, the fictional city I am building beneath The Beach, where storefronts of the future will reflect peace, love, community. The shop of unconditional love, the laud shop, the hug store, etc...

We practice whining for a while.
